Mothers-to-be often have questions about dental care during their pregnancies. They have concerns about x-rays or anesthetics that may be used during dental treatment, and many experience changes in their dental health while they are pregnant.
GOOD ORAL HYGIENE Pregnant women have good reason to pay special attention to their dental hygiene. During pregnancy, many women experience increased sensitivity and bleeding from their gums due to hormonal changes. Plaque buildup may increase as well due to dietary changes and increased food intake. For all these reasons, pregnant women should continue with good home-care practices and examinations in our office.
SAFETY FOR MOTHER AND BABY During pregnancy, many women abstain from using any medications. When it comes to dental treatment, women are discouraged from undergoing any elective procedures during the first trimester. Routine x-rays should not be taken either. For necessary dental work and emergencies x-rays can be taken with the protection of a lead apron. The need for local anesthetic should be discussed with regard to the procedure being performed and at what stage the woman is during her pregnancy.
NO TIME TO SKIMP Pregnancy is no time to skimp on necessary dental care. Although pregnant women should give their oral health extra attention, some studies have found that fewer than 40 percent of pregnant women see a dentist between conception and delivery.
